The Amended EU AI Act Timeline for Robotics

EU regulation as amended; staged application. Law checked through October 18, 2026.

The merchants of the Hanseatic League learned that a ship's cargo answered to the law of every port it entered, whatever the law at home. Texas robotics companies selling into Europe face the same rule, and the European calendar has just moved.

Regulation (EU) 2026/1744, adopted as part of the Union's digital omnibus and in force since July 27, 2026, amended the AI Act's deadlines. Obligations for stand-alone high-risk systems listed in Annex III, such as systems used in employment, critical infrastructure, or law enforcement, now apply from December 2, 2027 instead of August 2, 2026. Obligations for AI embedded in products already governed by EU product-safety law, listed in Annex I, now apply from August 2, 2028 instead of August 2, 2027.

Machinery received particular treatment. The amendment moves the Machinery Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2023/1230, into the part of Annex I that is excluded from the AI Act's technical obligations. Instead, high-risk AI requirements are to be written into the machinery regime by delegated act by August 2, 2028, so that a machine with an AI safety component faces one conformity assessment rather than two. The Machinery Regulation itself still applies from January 20, 2027.

For a Texas manufacturer of industrial or service robots, the sequence is now plain: prepare for the new machinery rules in January 2027, and watch for the delegated act that will set the AI-specific requirements for machinery.

Limits

The delegated act has not been adopted, and its content will decide the real burden. Dates for other AI Act provisions, including general-purpose model rules, are outside this analysis.
